Ashtanga Vinyasa is a highly structured system of postures (asanas), which constitutes three series. According to traditions, these series must be exercised progressively.
Despite being the first stage of Ashtanga yoga, many advanced practitioners consider the first series to be the most difficult. The yoga practitioners must learn to juggle various aspects of the practice, such as attention to alignments, concentration on the breath, the connection between breathing and movement, activation of bandhas, maintenance of a state of mind of presence, and equanimity. Along with all this, it is also essential to develop the body’s strength and flexibility, which often does not collaborate.
Series of Ashtanga
The first series of Ashtanga is called Yoga Chikitsa, which means “treatment” or “cure” by yoga in Sanskrit. The purpose is to facilitate the purification of the body and the spirit by neutralizing all imbalances that help in eliminating toxins and accumulated tensions.
The physical intensity of the practice generates internal heat, which is essential in this detoxification process. According to Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, the father of Ashtanga Vinyasa, the heat stirs the blood that leads to better circulation and expels pain and disease. In addition to cleansing the body, the mind is also get purified during the constant exercise of concentration on Drishti (points where the yogi must fix his gaze on each posture) and breathing in this practice.
